Boscombe

Shopping and markets

Just two miles east of Bournemouth town centre is Boscombe - full of local character, there's lots to see and explore. Known for its market that’s open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 9am – 5pm, you’ll find a wide range of fresh local produce that's an inspiration for both professional and home chefs!

Look out for ‘not on the high street’ finds too as you browse the clothing, jewellery and bric-a-brac stalls. There’s also a wide range of shops to explore under cover in the Sovereign centre and Victorian Royal arcade, a beautiful throwback to the Victorian era with a fascinating and varied range of independent shops including a record shop, galleries and art supplies, clothes, tarot reading and a café with outdoor seating.

In Boscombe there's no shortage of places to stop for a bite to eat, with cafes and restaurants offering fare from around the world, there’s something for everyone.

Seafront strolling

Wander towards the seafront and you’ll find Boscombe Pier. Opened in 1889 the 600 foot long Pier offers fantastic views along the coast, whilst the promenade offers places to eat and drink.

Gardens and goats!

For a bracing walk, explore Boscombe's parks and gardens. Originally opened in 1900, Boscombe Cliff Gardens merge into the Boscombe Overcliff Local Nature Reserve. The outward looking Cliff Gardens also lead through to the more sheltered Italianate Gardens. Both overlook beautiful cliffs grazed by a small herd of feral goats. The area was designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 2007 and, with almost 23 acres, is a site of ecological importance. It's easily accessible and popular with visitors.

Nightlife and entertainment

Boscombe has its own thriving nightlife scene with established venues such as the O2 Academy hosting a wide range of local, national and international artists. The O2 Academy itself has a rather fascinating history, as its past incarnations include a circus, theatre, ballroom and nightclub.

Find out what’s on at the Shelley Theatre. Built in 1870, the Shelley theatre was the private abode and performing home to the world famous Shelleys, a theatrical and literary dynasty from the 19th century. After a period of alternate use, the Shelley Theatre Trust is currently restoring the theatre to its former glory. It offers a full, year-round performance and film programme.

Wildly regarded as a more deprived borough of Bournemouth, Boscombe has undergone regeneration in recent years. Properties are a mixture of predominently flats and houses, dating back as far back as 1880. Prices for an apartment start as low as £100,000 whilst a huose can be bought for £300,000.
